But before we can say goodbye to this negativity, we need to be able to identify it. How do you know if it’s your inner critic talking or just a normal thought? Well, here are a few telltale signs:

  1. It’s a Debbie Downer: Your inner critic always has something negative to say, no matter what the situation is. “You’re never going to be successful,” “You’re not smart enough for that job,” “You’ll never find love.” Sound familiar?
  2. It’s a perfectionist: Your inner critic wants you to be perfect, and if you’re not, it’s not happy. “That presentation was terrible,” “You should have done better on that test,” “You didn’t run fast enough.”
  3. It’s a repeat offender: Your inner critic is always there, nagging away in the background. It never takes a break, and it’s always bringing you down.

Now that we know what to look for, it’s time to give our inner critic the heave-ho. But how do we do that?

  1. Acknowledge it: The first step to getting rid of your inner critic is to acknowledge that it exists. Recognize when it’s talking, and know that you don’t have to listen to it.
  2. Give it a name: Give your inner critic a name, so you can refer to it when it starts to chime in. I like to call mine “Negative Nelly.”
  3. Talkback: When Negative Nelly starts to talk, talk back! Tell it that you don’t believe what it’s saying and that you’re not going to listen to it anymore.
  4. Surround yourself with positivity: Surround yourself with positive people, read inspiring books, and do things that make you happy. This will help you to focus on the good things in your life and not let your inner critic get the best of you.
